Ingredients
Hamburger Steaks
- 2 lbs Ground beef - 80/20 blend for best flavor
- ½ cup Breadcrumbs - Plain or seasoned
- 1 Egg - Beaten
- 1 Onion - Finely diced
- 2 teaspoons Salt
- 1 teaspoon Black pepper
Creamy Gravy
- 3 tablespoons Butter - Salted or unsalted
- 3 tablespoons All-purpose flour - For thickening gravy
- 2 cups Beef broth - Low sodium preferred
- 1 cup Heavy cream
- 1 Onion - Sliced
- 1 teaspoon Garlic powder
Instructions
- Mix the hamburger steak ingredients: In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, beaten egg, finely diced onion, salt, and black pepper until just mixed to avoid tough meat.
- Form patties: Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 oval-shaped patties. Set them aside while you prepare the gravy base so the flavors meld.
- Brown the patties: Heat an oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat and brown the patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side until golden brown. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- Prepare the gravy base: In the same skillet, melt butter and sauté the sliced onions until soft and translucent. Stir in the flour and cook for 2 minutes to create a roux, stirring constantly.
- Add liquids and season: Whisk in the beef broth gradually, then add the heavy cream and garlic powder. Stir continuously until the gravy thickens and becomes smooth.
- Bake the hamburger steaks: Nestle the browned patties gently into the creamy gravy. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid or foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes.
- Finish baking uncovered: Remove the cover and continue baking uncovered for an additional 15 minutes to thicken the gravy and finish cooking the patties.
- Rest and serve: Take the skillet out of the oven and let the dish rest for 10 minutes to allow the flavors to settle before serving with mashed potatoes or your favorite sides.
Notes
- Nutrition information is approximate; use your ingredients with a trusted nutrition calculator for precise data.
- Use an 80/20 ground beef mix for the best balance of flavor and juiciness.
- Browning the patties before baking enhances flavor and texture.
- For a thicker gravy, you may increase the flour slightly, or simmer longer uncovered.
- If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, transfer everything to a 9x13 baking dish before baking.
