This warm and cozy apple crisp features a perfect balance of tart apples and a crunchy, buttery pecan-oat topping. Served best with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, it's an ideal dessert for fall and year-round enjoyment.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 5 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

For the Topping

  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons packed light brown sugar
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • Pinch of salt
  • 6 tablespoons very cold unsalted butter, cut into ½-inch (13-mm) dice
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • ½ cup old-fashioned rolled oats

For the Apples

  • pounds tart baking apples (about 5 large), peeled, cored, and sliced ¼-inch (6-mm) thick
  • 6 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and position an oven rack in the middle to ensure even baking.
  2. Make the Topping: In a food processor, pulse together the flour, brown sugar, ¼ cup granulated sugar, and a pinch of salt until combined. Add the cold butter pieces and pulse until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Transfer this crumbly mixture to a bowl and stir in the chopped pecans and rolled oats. Set aside the topping mixture.
  3. Prepare Apples: Butter a shallow 2-quart (2-L) baking dish generously. In a medium bowl, toss the peeled, cored, and sliced apples with the remaining 6 tablespoons of granulated sugar until evenly coated.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Transfer the sugared apples into the prepared baking dish, spreading them evenly. Sprinkle the oat-pecan topping evenly over the apples. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40 to 50 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a fork and the topping is nicely toasted and golden brown.
  5. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm, optionally topped with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream for an extra indulgence.

Notes

  • Storage: Store the apple crisp covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days. To reheat, warm in a 350°F oven until the topping is crisp and filling is heated through, about 15 minutes. It can also be enjoyed cold or at room temperature.
  • Freezing: The baked apple crisp freezes well for up to 3 months when tightly covered. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat uncovered in a 300°F (150°C) oven until warmed through and crisp on top before serving.
