Ingredients
For the Onions:
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 1 tablespoon water
For the Burgers:
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20 or 85/15)
- Kosher salt, to taste
- Ground black pepper, to taste
- 4 slices American cheese
For the Buns:
- 4 hamburger buns
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) salted butter, softened
- Nonstick cooking spray, for toasting buns
Instructions
- Sauté the Onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the finely diced onions and water, then cook for 5-7 minutes until the onions soften. Remove from heat and set aside.
- Toast the Buns: Place the hamburger buns cut side up on a sheet pan and spray them lightly with nonstick cooking spray. Broil in the oven until they turn golden brown. Remove from oven and set aside.
- Prepare the Buns: Evenly divide the sautéed onions on the bottom halves of the buns. Spread about 2 tablespoons of softened butter on each top bun half. Set aside.
- Form the Patties: Divide the ground beef into four equal portions (or six portions for thinner burgers). Shape each portion into a ball without overworking the meat.
- Preheat the Cooking Surface: Heat a griddle or outdoor grill to medium-high heat for cooking the patties.
- Cook the Patties: Place the beef balls onto the hot griddle or grill. Using a spatula or burger press, flatten them into thin patties. Season each patty with kosher salt and black pepper. Cook for 3-5 minutes, then flip.
- Add Cheese and Finish Cooking: After flipping, place a slice of American cheese on each patty. Continue cooking for another 3-5 minutes or until the patties reach your preferred doneness (medium is usually 160°F internal temperature).
- Assemble and Serve: Transfer each cooked patty to the bottom bun with onions, then top with the buttered top bun. Serve immediately with your favorite hamburger toppings and enjoy!
Notes
- You can make thinner burgers by dividing the beef into six portions instead of four.
- Use an instant-read thermometer to check for the desired doneness: 160°F for medium.
- Butter the buns generously to add richness and flavor.
- American cheese melts perfectly for classic Butter Burgers, but feel free to substitute your favorite cheese.
