A deliciously creamy and cheesy potato bake featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a rich garlic cream mixture and melted cheese, baked to a golden brown perfection. Perfect as a comforting side dish for any meal.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 1kg potatoes, peeled

Dairy & Cream

  • 100g cheese, grated (Colby or preferred type)
  • 1.5 cups cream and/or milk (suggested ¾ cup milk + ¾ cup cream)

Flavors

  • 2 cloves fresh garlic, crushed
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 190°C to prepare for baking the potato layers evenly.
  2. Slice Potatoes: Thinly slice the peeled potatoes to ensure they cook through evenly and layers form properly.
  3. Prepare Cream Mixture: In a bowl, combine the cream and/or milk with crushed garlic, salt, and pepper to taste, mixing well to distribute flavors.
  4. Layer Ingredients: Place a thin layer of potato slices on the base of an ovenproof dish. Sprinkle grated cheese and add dollops of the creamy garlic mixture over the potatoes.
  5. Repeat Layers: Continue layering the potatoes, cheese, and creamy mix until all the ingredients are used up, finishing with cheese on top.
  6. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 80 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the top has turned golden brown and bubbly.

Notes

  • If making gluten free, always check labels on processed foods including sauces used.
  • You can use all cream, all milk, or a mix of both—commonly a half and half blend improves creaminess while controlling richness.
  • Choose your favorite melting cheese such as Colby, which melts well and adds a mild flavor.
  • Adjust salt and pepper according to your taste preference, especially since cheeses vary in saltiness.
