Ingredients
Pie Filling
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 large eggs, well beaten
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup finely chopped walnuts
- 1 cup milk chocolate chips
Pie Crust
- 1 9-inch homemade pie crust or store-bought
For Serving
- Vanilla ice cream (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
- Prepare the filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine melted and cooled butter with granulated sugar, brown sugar, and flour. Stir in the beaten eggs and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth. Fold in the chopped walnuts and milk chocolate chips evenly.
- Assemble the pie: Pour the prepared filling mixture into the 9-inch pie crust, spreading it evenly.
- Bake the pie: Place the pie in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 55 minutes. Begin checking around 35 minutes; if the crust is browning too quickly, cover it loosely with foil or a crust protector to prevent burning.
- Cool or serve warm: For a warm and gooey texture, serve the pie immediately after baking. For a firmer slice, let the pie cool for a few hours before cutting. Optionally, serve with vanilla ice cream for a classic combination.
Notes
- Add a splash of Kentucky Bourbon to the filling to bring the pie closer to the authentic Derby Pie flavor.
- Monitor the crust while baking to avoid over-browning, especially after 35 minutes.
- Use a crust protector or foil to cover crust edges if needed during baking.
- Walnuts can be substituted with pecans for a traditional Derby Pie twist.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
