Cinnamon Sugar Donut Bread is a delightful quick bread combining the soft, moist texture of traditional bread with the sweet, spiced sugar coating reminiscent of a sugar donut. This homemade treat features a tender crumb and a cinnamon-nutmeg sugar crust, making it perfect for breakfast, brunch, or as a sweet snack anytime.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes
  • Yield: 1 loaf (about 8-10 servings)

Ingredients

Bread

  • 2 cups (250 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ cups (300 g) granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 ¼ cups (306 g) whole milk
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Spiced Sugar Coating

  • ¼ cup (½ stick / 57 g) unsalted butter, melted
  • ½ cup (100 g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray an 8 ½ x 4 ½-inch loaf pan with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine 2 cups all-purpose flour, 1 ½ cups granulated sugar, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and ½ teaspoon kosher salt. Stir these ingredients together to ensure they are evenly distributed.
  3. Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 ¼ cups whole milk, 1 large room temperature egg, 2 tablespoons melted unsalted butter, and 1 tablespoon vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and thoroughly combined.
  4. Mix Batter: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir gently until just combined, being careful not to overmix. The batter should be slightly runny but uniformly mixed.
  5. Fill Loaf Pan: Pour the batter evenly into the prepared loaf pan, using a spatula to spread it out if necessary.
  6. Bake: Place the pan into the preheated oven and bake for 60-70 minutes. The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs and the top turns golden brown.
  7. Cool Bread: Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes for easier handling.
  8. Remove from Pan: Carefully remove the bread from the loaf pan and place it onto a large piece of parchment paper to continue cooling.
  9. Apply Butter Topping: While the bread is still warm, brush the entire surface with ¼ cup melted unsalted butter to help the sugar coating stick.
  10. Prepare Sugar Coating: In a small bowl, mix ½ cup granulated sugar, 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg until well combined.
  11. Coat Bread: Sprinkle the cinnamon-nutmeg sugar mixture evenly over the buttered bread, turning the loaf as needed to coat all sides. Reserve any leftover sugar mixture for future use.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the batter to keep the bread tender and moist.
  • Using whole milk enhances the richness and moisture of the bread.
  • Let the bread cool slightly before applying the butter and sugar topping to prevent it from soaking in excessively.
  • Leftover spiced sugar mixture can be stored in an airtight container and reused for other baked goods or toppings.
  • The bread is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
  • Reheat slices lightly before serving for a soft, warm treat.
