Ingredients
Batter
- 1 egg
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup self-raising flour
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
Onions
- 2 large onions, sliced into rings
- 1/3 cup flour, for coating onions
Frying
- 1L oil, for frying
Instructions
- Heat oil: Place the oil in a large cast iron dish and heat over medium-high heat until hot enough for frying.
- Prepare batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Add the self-raising flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper, then whisk until smooth and well combined.
- Coat onions: In a separate bowl, toss the onion rings with flour to coat them evenly. This helps the batter stick better to the onions.
- Fry onion rings: Dip each floured onion ring into the batter, allowing excess batter to drip off. Carefully place about 4 rings at a time into the hot oil. Fry, turning gently after a few minutes, until both sides are golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and repeat: Remove the fried onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Repeat frying the remaining rings in batches, adjusting heat as needed to prevent overheating the oil.
- Serve: Serve the onion rings immediately while hot and crispy, with your favorite dipping sauce or as an accompaniment to burgers.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before frying to achieve a crispy texture; test by dropping a small bit of batter into the oil—it should sizzle immediately.
- Do not overcrowd the pan as it can lower the oil temperature and result in soggy onion rings.
- Use a cast iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan to maintain steady heat during frying.
- For a gluten-free option, substitute self-raising flour with a gluten-free baking flour blend.
- Onion rings are best enjoyed immediately for maximum crispiness but can be kept warm in a low-temperature oven for a short time.
