Ingredients
Potato Mixture:
- 1 1/2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and diced
Meat & Vegetables:
- 1 pound ground beef or shaved steak
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 1 green bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
Additional Ingredients:
- 2 cups shredded cheddar or provolone cheese
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- Cooking spray or butter for greasing
Instructions
- Prepare the Crockpot: Grease the inside of the crockpot with cooking spray or butter to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier.
- Cook the Meat and Vegetables: In a skillet, brown the ground beef or shaved steak over medium heat until fully cooked. Add the diced onion, green bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until the vegetables are softened and fragrant.
- Combine Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked meat and vegetable mixture with the diced potatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir well to evenly distribute all ingredients.
- Layer the Casserole: Place half of the combined mixture into the bottom of the crockpot. Sprinkle half of the shredded cheese evenly over the mixture. Repeat by layering the remaining potato mixture and topping it with the remaining cheese.
- Cook the Casserole: Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 6–7 hours or on high for 3–4 hours, until the potatoes are tender and the cheese has melted completely.
- Serve: Once cooked, serve the casserole warm. Optionally, add extra cheese on top for added richness and flavor.
Notes
- Make-ahead option: Assemble the casserole directly in the crockpot insert, refrigerate overnight, and cook the next day.
- Freezer-friendly: Portion the cooked casserole and freeze for up to 2 months for convenient future meals.
- Use provolone cheese for an authentic cheesesteak flavor or cheddar cheese for a creamier texture.
- Opt for lean beef or turkey to keep the dish lighter and increase protein content.
- Add jalapeños or substitute pepper jack cheese for a spicy variation.
