This Easy Apple Crisp recipe is a classic comforting dessert featuring tender, cinnamon-spiced apples topped with a buttery, crumbly mixture. It’s baked to golden perfection and served warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a delightful treat.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 10 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

For the Crumb Mixture

  • ½ cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup brown sugar (packed)
  • ¼ cup butter (softened)*
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • *If you use unsalted butter then add ¼ teaspoon of salt.

For the Apple Mixture

  • 5 large apples (peeled, cored and thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2-3 tablespoons brown sugar*
  • 1 - 1½ tablespoons corn starch**
  • *If your apples are sweet you may want to add only a tablespoon of sugar.
  • **If you want a thicker sauce then add a little corn starch. This recipe did not use any corn starch.

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly butter an 8-inch (20 cm) round or square baking pan to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the Crumb Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and salt. Add the softened butter and combine using a fork or your fingers until large crumbs form. Set this crumb mixture aside.
  3. Prepare the Apple Mixture: Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples. As you slice, place them in a large bowl and drizzle with lemon juice to prevent browning. Gently toss to coat. Add the cinnamon, brown sugar (2-3 tablespoons depending on sweetness), and corn starch if desired for a thicker sauce. Gently mix to combine all ingredients well without breaking the apple slices.
  4. Assemble and Bake: Transfer the apple mixture into the prepared baking pan, spreading it evenly. Sprinkle the crumb mixture evenly over the apples. The pan will be quite full, but the filling will settle as it bakes. Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 60 minutes, or until the apples are tender when pierced with a toothpick and the topping is golden brown.
  5. Cool and Serve: Allow the apple crisp to cool for about 15 minutes to set before serving. For an extra special touch, serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoy this classic dessert at its best!

Notes

  • Storage: The apple crisp can be kept covered at room temperature for up to one day.
