Ingredients
Fruit Roll Ups Ingredients
- 4 cups chopped strawberries (about 1 1/2 lbs whole)
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 Tablespoons lemon juice
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Heat your oven to its lowest temperature, generally between 150℉ and 180℉ (66℃ - 82℃), to prepare for slow baking the fruit leather.
- Prepare Pan: Line a sheet pan with parchment paper and set it aside. This will ensure the fruit leather doesn't stick during baking.
- Combine Ingredients: In a medium saucepan, mix together the chopped strawberries, sugar, and lemon juice evenly.
- Cook Fruit Mixture: Cook the mixture over medium to medium-low heat, stirring regularly to prevent burning, until it becomes thick and jammy, which should take about 20-25 minutes.
- Cool Slightly: Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the mixture to cool for about 10 minutes, making it safer to blend.
- Blend: Pour the cooled mixture into a blender and purée until smooth, removing any lumps for a consistent texture.
- Pour Mixture: Pour the smooth purée onto the parchment-lined baking pan.
- Spread Evenly: Using an offset spatula, spread the purée evenly and thinly to about 1/16-inch thickness to ensure proper drying during baking.
- Bake Fruit Leather: Bake in the preheated oven for 4-8 hours. After 4 hours, check every 30 minutes until the leather is no longer sticky to the touch and has a pliable, leathery texture.
- Cut into Strips: Once cooled, use a pizza cutter or scissors to cut the fruit leather into strips for easy serving and storage.
Notes
- Cooking time may vary depending on oven temperature and thickness of the fruit spread; patience is key for best texture.
- Store homemade fruit roll ups in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for longer shelf life.
- For a sugar-free version, consider using a natural sweetener or reducing sugar according to taste.
- Use ripe, sweet strawberries for the best flavor and avoid overly tart fruit unless you like a tangy twist.
- Use parchment paper to prevent sticking and ease removal of the fruit leather from the pan.
