Ingredients
Main Ingredients
- 1 lb. ground meat (ground pork, turkey, chicken, or beef)
- 1 small sweet onion, diced
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- ¼ cup less sodium soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce (or extra 1 tablespoon for sweeter sauce)
- 2 teaspoons minced fresh garlic
- 1 teaspoon ground ginger or 1 ½ tablespoons grated fresh ginger
- 1 (16 ounce) bag coleslaw mix
- ½ cup grated or “matchstick” carrots
- 2 green onions, thinly sliced
- Kosher salt and ground black pepper, to taste
Optional Garnishes
- Sliced green onions
- Chives
- Fresh cilantro
- Toasted sesame seeds
- Chopped peanuts
- Crunchy chow mein noodles
- Squeeze of fresh lime juice
Instructions
- Cook the Meat: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground meat and cook, stirring frequently, until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess grease from the skillet and return the meat to the pan.
- Cook Onion and Add Flavorings: Add the diced sweet onion, sesame oil, and rice vinegar to the skillet. Stir and cook until the onion becomes tender, approximately 4-5 minutes.
- Add Sauce Ingredients: Pour in the soy sauce and hoisin sauce, then add the minced garlic and ginger. Stir to combine all flavors evenly in the skillet.
- Add Vegetables: Add the coleslaw mix and grated carrots to the skillet. Cook, stirring often, for about 5-7 minutes or until the cabbage wilts and softens.
- Finish and Season: Remove the skillet from heat. Stir in the thinly sliced green onions and season the dish with kosher salt and ground black pepper according to your taste.
- Serve with Garnishes: Optionally, garnish with sliced green onions, chives, fresh cilantro, toasted sesame seeds, chopped peanuts, crunchy chow mein noodles, or a squeeze of fresh lime juice for extra flavor and texture.
Notes
- Do not omit the toasted sesame oil as it gives the dish the essential Asian egg roll flavor.
- Customize this recipe by adding diced celery, sweet bell peppers, snap peas, snow peas, or baby corn for extra veggies.
- If you prefer a richer, sweeter sauce, add an extra tablespoon or two of hoisin sauce.
