Ingredients
Cake:
- 1 box white or vanilla cake mix (15.25 ounces, e.g. Betty Crocker’s® Super Moist White Cake Mix)
- 3 large eggs
- 1/2 cup sour cream
- 1 cup cold milk
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
Topping:
- 2 cups cold milk
- 1 (3.4 ounce) small box vanilla instant pudding
- 1 (8 ounce) container whipped topping, thawed (e.g. Cool Whip)
Decorations:
- Blueberries
- Mini marshmallows
- Sliced strawberries
- Unsweetened shredded coconut
Instructions
- Prepare the cake batter: In a large mixing bowl, combine the cake mix, eggs, sour cream, 1 cup cold milk, and melted butter. Stir until all ingredients are well incorporated and the batter is smooth.
- Bake the cake: Transfer the batter into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, preferably glass, spreading evenly. Bake according to the package instructions for the cake mix, following the recommended oven temperature and baking time. Once baked, allow the cake to cool completely in the dish.
- Make the pudding topping: In a separate bowl, whisk together the vanilla instant pudding mix and 2 cups cold milk vigorously for about two minutes until the mixture thickens, following the pudding package directions.
- Combine pudding and whipped topping: Gently fold the prepared pudding into the thawed whipped topping until fully blended, creating a creamy topping mixture.
- Spread topping over cake: Evenly spread the whipped topping and pudding mixture over the cooled cake surface with a spatula.
- Create flag decoration: Outline a square in the top left corner of the cake using blueberries, then fill this square with more blueberries, leaving some white space visible. Optionally, fill in the white spaces with mini marshmallows to represent the stars. Arrange sliced strawberries in 4 to 5 horizontal rows to form the flag stripes. Between the strawberry rows, either leave white space visible or fill with shredded coconut for a textured effect.
- Chill and serve: Refrigerate the decorated cake until ready to serve to allow the topping to set and flavors to meld.
Notes
- Use a glass or ceramic 9x13-inch baking dish for best results.
- Ensure the cake is completely cooled before adding the pudding topping to prevent melting.
- For a firmer topping, you can chill the pudding mixture before folding it into the whipped topping.
- Decorations can be customized with other berries or fruits to suit the occasion.
- Store leftover cake covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
