These homemade baked frosted chocolate donuts are a delicious treat that combines the nutty flavor of browned butter with the rich taste of chocolate glaze. Made with wholesome ingredients like Greek yogurt and avocado oil, they offer a tender crumb and a perfectly sweet chocolate coating. Ideal for breakfast or dessert, these donuts are baked instead of fried, making them a lighter yet indulgent option.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes
  • Yield: 12 donuts

Ingredients

For the Donuts

  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup or honey
  • 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips

For the Glaze/Frosting

  • 2 tablespoons avocado oil
  • 1 cup mini chocolate chips (can use the same as in batter or additional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350° F. Grease a 6-cup donut pan or a 12-cup muffin pan thoroughly with melted butter to ensure the donuts don’t stick.
  2. Bake Butter: Place 4 tablespoons of salted butter in a pot over medium heat. Cook it until it browns lightly and emits a toasted aroma, about 2-3 minutes. Remove from heat to avoid burning.
  3. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the browned butter, maple syrup (or honey), Greek yogurt, eggs, and vanilla extract until everything is well combined.
  4. Add Dry Ingredients: To this wet mixture, add the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir gently until just combined, careful not to overmix to keep the donuts tender. Fold in the mini chocolate chips.
  5. Fill the Pan and Bake: Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pan cavities, filling each about half to two-thirds full. Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the donuts are just set and a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  6. Cool Donuts: Remove the donuts from the oven and let them cool in the pan for 5 minutes. Then, run a knife around the edges to loosen them and invert the pan to remove the donuts.
  7. Prepare Chocolate Glaze: In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the mini chocolate chips and avocado oil. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each, until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
  8. Frost the Donuts: Dip the cooled donuts into the melted chocolate glaze to coat them or drizzle it on top. Allow the chocolate to set at room temperature or quickly chill the donuts in the freezer until the glaze hardens.

Notes

  • You can substitute maple syrup with honey for a slightly different sweetness.
  • Using browned butter enhances the flavor with a nutty note, but keep an eye to not burn it.
  • If mini chocolate chips are not available, chop regular chocolate chips into smaller pieces.
  • Ensure eggs are at room temperature to help the batter mix more evenly.
  • Avoid overmixing the batter to maintain a light, tender donut texture.
  • The glaze sets faster if chilled briefly, but can also set at room temperature.
