Ingredients
Donuts
- 125 grams all purpose flour
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 56 grams unsalted butter, melted
- 106 grams light brown sugar
- 113 ml buttermilk, room temperature
- 1 egg, room temperature
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cinnamon Sugar Coating
- 150 grams sugar
- ½ tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 115 grams butter, melted
Instructions
- Preheat and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a donut pan thoroughly with butter or baking spray to ensure the donuts release easily after baking.
- Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the all purpose flour, light brown sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, baking powder, baking soda, and kosher salt until fully combined to evenly distribute the spices and leavening agents.
- Combine Wet Ingredients: In a separate jug, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth and homogeneous, ensuring the butter is fully incorporated.
- Mix Batter: Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold together until just combined, making sure no pockets of flour remain but avoiding overmixing to keep donuts tender.
- Pipe Batter Into Pan: Transfer the batter to a piping bag or use a spoon to fill each cavity of the donut pan about 3/4 full to allow room for rising in the oven.
- Bake Donuts: Bake the donuts for 11-13 minutes until they turn golden brown and springy to the touch. Remove the pan from the oven and let the donuts sit for 5 minutes before carefully removing them to a wire rack to cool slightly.
- Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: While the donuts bake, mix the sugar and ground cinnamon together in a small bowl for the coating.
- Coat Donuts: Use a pastry brush to gently coat each warm donut with melted butter. Then immediately dip each donut into the cinnamon sugar mixture, ensuring a full, even coating for a sweet and flavorful crust.
- Cool Completely: Place the coated donuts on a wire rack and allow them to cool completely before serving for the best texture and flavor.
Notes
- Ensure all wet ingredients are at room temperature to promote even mixing and better texture.
- Do not overmix the batter to avoid tough donuts; mix until just combined.
- Re-grease the donut pan between batches to prevent sticking.
- Donuts are best enjoyed the same day but can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute buttermilk with a vegan buttermilk alternative and use vegan butter.
