This Homemade Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake replicates the beloved classic dessert with layers of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, rich hot fudge sauce, crunchy Oreos, and a fluffy whipped cream topping. Perfect for special occasions or a cool treat, this no-bake cake comes together with simple steps and freezes into an impressive crowd-pleaser.

  • Total Time: 8 hours 20 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings

Ingredients

Ice Cream Layers

  • 2 quarts chocolate ice cream (freshly churned or softened)
  • 2 quarts vanilla ice cream (freshly churned or softened)

Hot Fudge Layer

  • 1 recipe Hot Fudge Sauce (prepared and cooled)

Cookie Layer

  • 24 Oreo cookies (finely chopped)

Whipped Cream Topping

  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 4 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Lightly butter a 9-inch springform pan to ensure easy removal of the cake after freezing.
  2. Layer Chocolate Ice Cream: Spread the chocolate ice cream evenly at the bottom of the springform pan and freeze for 30 minutes to firm up.
  3. Add Hot Fudge and Oreo Layer: Warm the prepared hot fudge sauce slightly if chilled, then spread it over the chocolate ice cream. Sprinkle finely chopped Oreos over the fudge, pressing lightly so they stick, then freeze for at least another 30 minutes.
  4. Add Vanilla Ice Cream Layer: Dollop the vanilla ice cream over the Oreo layer and spread gently but evenly. Freeze the entire cake for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow it to set solidly.
  5. Unmold the Cake: One hour to twelve hours before serving, remove the cake from the freezer. To release it from the pan, invert onto a plate or cardboard round, wrap a hot kitchen towel around the pan for 30 seconds until loosened, then carefully slide the pan off. Remove the base, place a serving plate on top, turn the cake right side up, and return to the freezer for at least 10 minutes.
  6. Make Whipped Cream: While the cake refreezes, whip the heavy cream with sugar and vanilla extract on medium-high speed using a stand mixer whisk attachment until light, fluffy, and holding medium to firm peaks, about 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Decorate the Cake: Spread the whipped cream evenly over the frozen cake quickly to prevent melting. For a professional touch, pipe a shell border around the top and bottom using a Wilton #21 decorating tip. Optionally, add sprinkles on top. If the ice cream softens, return the cake to the freezer for 5 minutes to firm up.
  8. Serve the Cake: Remove the cake from the freezer 5 minutes before serving to soften slightly. Use a hot, dry knife dipped in hot water and wiped clean between each slice to achieve the cleanest cuts.

Notes

  • Make sure ice cream is softened but not melted when layering for easier spreading.
  • Press Oreos gently into the fudge layer to ensure they stick well.
  • Wrapping the pan with a hot towel warms it just enough to release the cake without melting the ice cream.
  • For cleaner knife cuts, always dip the knife in hot water and dry between slices.
  • Use quality hot fudge sauce for the best flavor and texture.
  • This cake must be kept frozen until shortly before serving.
