These homemade garlic breadsticks are soft, buttery, and infused with a rich garlic flavor, perfect for serving alongside pasta dishes, soups, or salads. Made from scratch with activated yeast and a buttery garlic topping, they offer a delightful combination of fluffy interior and golden crust, garnished optionally with dried parsley or herbs for extra aroma and color.

  • Total Time: 2 hours 10 minutes
  • Yield: 16 breadsticks

Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 and ⅓ cups (320mL) warm water
  • 2 and ¼ teaspoons (7g) dry active yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 and ½ Tablespoons (19g) granulated sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons (43g) unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 and ½ teaspoons salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 3 and ¾ to 4 cups (450-480g) all-purpose flour

Topping Ingredients

  • ¼ cup (56g) unsalted butter (melted)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • Optional: dried parsley or other herbs for sprinkling on top

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a large bowl or stand mixer bowl, whisk together warm water, dry active yeast, and sugar. Allow the mixture to rest for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy, indicating the yeast is activated.
  2. Combine Dough Ingredients: Add melted butter, salt, garlic powder, and about 1 cup of flour to the yeast mixture. Using a stand mixer with a hook attachment or by hand, mix for approximately 30 seconds to combine.
  3. Add Remaining Flour: Gradually add the remaining flour (3¾ to 4 cups total) and mix on medium speed until the dough forms and pulls away from the sides, about 2 minutes. If it’s too sticky, add flour by tablespoons, but avoid over-flouring to keep the dough soft.
  4. Knead the Dough: Continue kneading the dough in the mixer or by hand on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until it becomes tacky yet smooth and elastic, resembling fresh PlayDoh.
  5. Let Dough Rise: Lightly oil a large bowl and place the dough inside, rolling to coat with oil. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise for 1½ to 2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Prepare Baking Sheets: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats and set aside.
  7. Shape Breadsticks: Punch down the risen dough and turn it onto a work surface. Divide into two equal halves (about 1 pound each). Cut each half into 8 equal pieces (~2 ounces each). Roll each piece into a 6-7 inch long log and arrange 8 breadsticks per baking sheet.
  8. Second Rise: Cover shaped breadsticks loosely with a towel and let rise for 20 minutes until puffy. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C).
  9. Bake Breadsticks: Remove towel and bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown. Rotate baking sheets halfway through to ensure even baking. If tops brown too fast, tent with foil.
  10. Prepare Garlic Butter Topping: While breadsticks bake, melt butter in a small bowl and stir in salt and garlic powder.
  11. Brush and Garnish: Remove breadsticks from the oven and immediately brush with garlic butter. Sprinkle with dried parsley or herbs if desired. Let cool slightly before serving.
  12. Storage: Store leftovers covered at room temperature for up to 1 day or refrigerate for up to 5 days. Reheat in microwave, toaster oven, or air fryer.

Notes

  • Use warm water (about 110°F / 43°C) to activate yeast properly without killing it.
  • Do not add too much flour to prevent tough breadsticks; dough should remain slightly tacky.
  • Rotate pans halfway through baking for even browning.
  • Tent with foil if breadsticks brown too quickly on top.
  • These breadsticks can be made ahead. Store fully cooled breadsticks in an airtight container or freeze. Reheat before serving.
  • For a variation, sprinkle Parmesan cheese or other herbs on the breadsticks before baking or after brushing with garlic butter.
