This homemade ranch dressing is a creamy, tangy, and flavorful sauce perfect for salads, dips, or drizzling over your favorite dishes. Made with simple ingredients like sour cream, mayonnaise, and herbs, it offers a fresh, customizable option that is easy to whip up in just 10 minutes.

  • Total Time: 10 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • ½ cup sour cream or whole milk Greek yogurt
  • ¼ to ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk or any milk

Seasonings and Herbs

  • 1 teaspoon dried dill
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon distilled white vinegar
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ to ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (optional)

Instructions

  1. Mix the Base: In a medium bowl, whisk together the sour cream, ¼ cup mayonnaise, 2 tablespoons milk, dried dill, lemon juice, vinegar, garlic powder, onion powder, ¼ teaspoon salt, and several grinds of black pepper. Adjust consistency by adding more mayonnaise for a thicker dressing or more milk for a thinner texture.
  2. Season to Taste: Taste the dressing and season with additional salt if needed. Then gently fold in the fresh chives and fresh dill, if using, to add brightness and extra flavor.
  3. Serve or Store: Use the ranch dressing immediately as a salad dressing, dip, or condiment. Otherwise, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to keep it fresh.

Notes

  • For a thicker ranch dressing, increase the mayonnaise amount.
  • For thinner consistency, add more buttermilk or milk gradually.
  • Fresh herbs add more vibrant flavor but dried herbs work well in a pinch.
  • Refrigerate in an airtight container and consume within 5 days for best quality and safety.
  • Adjust garlic and onion powder to your preferred level of taste.
  • This recipe is easily customizable by swapping sour cream for Greek yogurt for a tangier version.
