Ingredients
Dough Ingredients
- 2 Tablespoons active yeast
- 2½ cups warm water (110-115°F)
- 2 Tablespoons sugar
- 2 Tablespoons oil
- 1 Tablespoon salt
- 6 cups all-purpose flour (plus up to 1 cup extra for kneading)
Topping Ingredients
- ½ cup butter (melted, one stick)
- ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 2 Tablespoons garlic powder
- 2 teaspoons dried oregano
- 2 teaspoons dried basil
- 2 teaspoons dried parsley
- 2-3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
- Red onion (thinly sliced, optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Breadstick Dough: In a large mixing bowl, stir the active yeast into warm water (110-115°F), then add sugar and let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until frothy, indicating the yeast is active.
- Mix Dough Ingredients: Add oil, salt, and 6 cups of flour to the yeast mixture and stir to create a soft, sticky dough.
- Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a floured surface or keep it in the large bowl and knead for About 10 minutes, adding up to 1 cup extra flour as needed until the dough is smooth, elastic, and no longer sticky.
- Shape the Breadsticks: Lay out a piece of parchment paper to fit a large rimmed baking sheet. Lightly flour the parchment, then roll or stretch the dough into a rectangle directly on the paper. Use a pizza cutter to slice the dough into breadstick-sized rectangles and twist each piece if desired to add a decorative touch. Transfer the parchment with dough onto the baking sheet.
- Make the Italian Garlic Seasoning: In a small bowl, combine grated parmesan cheese, kosher salt, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried basil, and dried parsley, mixing well with a fork.
- Apply Butter and Seasoning: Brush the melted butter evenly over the breadstick dough on the baking sheet. Sprinkle the prepared Italian garlic seasoning generously over the top, then evenly scatter the shredded mozzarella cheese on top.
- Bake the Breadsticks: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 20 minutes or until the breadsticks turn golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Remove from oven and let the breadsticks cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with optional thinly sliced red onions and your favorite marinara sauce for dipping. Enjoy!
Notes
- Using parchment paper is optional but highly recommended for easy transferring, cutting, and serving.
- If you prefer a crispier crust, bake a few minutes longer while watching closely to avoid burning.
- Feel free to add other toppings such as sliced olives or pepperoni for variation.
- Leftover breadsticks can be reheated in the oven or toaster oven for best texture.
