This homemade Orange & Black Sesame Granola features two distinct flavors on one baking sheet: a bright citrusy orange granola and a rich, nutty black sesame granola. Crunchy clusters of oats, nuts, seeds, and millet are sweetened naturally with coconut sugar and maple syrup, enhanced by fresh orange zest and a hint of soy sauce for a balanced depth of flavor. Baked low and slow, this granola is perfect for a wholesome breakfast or an energizing snack that keeps for weeks.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Yield: 14 servings

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 cup (115g) rolled oats (for orange granola)
  • 2/3 cup (about 90g) mixed nuts and seeds (any mix you like, for orange granola)
  • 2 tablespoons millet (for orange granola)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened coconut flakes (for orange granola)
  • 1 tablespoon white sesame seeds (for orange granola)
  • 1 cup (115g) rolled oats (for black sesame granola)
  • 2/3 cup (about 90g) mixed nuts and seeds (any mix you like, for black sesame granola)
  • 2 tablespoons millet (for black sesame granola)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened coconut flakes (for black sesame granola)
  • 1 tablespoon white sesame seeds (for black sesame granola)

Orange Granola Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (45g) coconut sugar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1 large egg white
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Black Sesame Granola Wet Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 large egg white
  • 4 tablespoons (80g) black sesame paste
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 275ºF (135ºC) and adjust an oven rack to the center position. Line a half sheet baking pan with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare Dry Ingredients: In two medium bowls, combine the rolled oats, mixed nuts and seeds, millet, coconut flakes, and white sesame seeds separately to make two batches of dry ingredients for orange granola and black sesame granola. Set aside.
  3. Make Orange Granola Wet Mixture: In a small bowl, combine coconut sugar and orange zest using a fork to mix well. Add the egg white, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, soy sauce, and vanilla extract. Whisk thoroughly until the mixture is combined.
  4. Combine Orange Granola: Pour this orange syrup mixture into one bowl of dry ingredients. Using a flat spatula, mix the wet and dry ingredients until evenly combined.
  5. Spread Orange Granola: Pour the orange granola mixture onto one half of the lined baking sheet. Flatten it so all pieces touch with no large gaps.
  6. Make Black Sesame Granola Wet Mixture: In another small bowl, mix granulated sugar and orange zest with a fork. Add egg white, black sesame paste, melted coconut oil, maple syrup, soy sauce, and vanilla extract. Whisk until thoroughly combined.
  7. Combine Black Sesame Granola: Pour the black sesame mixture into the remaining dry ingredient bowl. Mix well with a spatula to combine.
  8. Spread Black Sesame Granola: Spread this mixture evenly over the remaining half of the baking sheet. Flatten so all granola pieces make contact, covering the entire sheet pan.
  9. Bake Granola: Bake the entire sheet pan for 68 to 70 minutes at 275ºF (135ºC). Rotate the pan halfway through baking at around 35 minutes for even cooking. The orange granola should turn a deep golden brown color.
  10. Cool Completely: Remove the granola from the oven and let it cool fully on the baking sheet. Cooling is essential for achieving a crunchy texture.
  11. Break and Store: Once cooled, break the granola into clusters or large shards for snacking. Store in an airtight container where it will remain crunchy for 2 to 3 weeks.

Notes

  • Note 1: Millet can be substituted with quinoa flakes or additional rolled oats for a similar texture.
  • Note 2: Coconut sugar may be replaced with brown sugar or maple sugar for a different sweetness profile.
  • Note 3: Soy sauce adds umami depth; tamari or coconut aminos can substitute for gluten-free or soy-free versions.
  • Note 4: Granulated sugar in the black sesame granola can be replaced with coconut sugar or maple sugar as well.
  • Note 5: Black sesame paste can be substituted with tahini or ground black sesame seeds mixed with a little oil for a similar flavor and texture.
