Ingredients
Salmon and Garnish
- 4 6-ounce salmon filets
- Optional: sliced green onions for garnish
- Optional: sesame seeds for garnish
Miso Marinade
- ¼ cup white miso paste
- ¼ cup mirin
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 2 tablespoons tamari soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
Instructions
- Make the miso marinade: In a small mixing bowl, whisk together the white miso paste, mirin, honey, tamari soy sauce, and sesame oil until smooth and well combined.
- Marinate the salmon: Pat the salmon filets dry thoroughly with a paper towel. Place them in a glass dish. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the marinade in a small bowl for later use. Pour the remaining marinade over the salmon, ensuring each filet is well coated. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 1 hour to allow flavors to penetrate.
- Broil the salmon: Preheat your oven's top broiler and line a quarter sheet pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking. Arrange the salmon filets on the lined pan. Position the oven rack approximately 5 to 6 inches below the broiler. Broil the salmon for 7 to 9 minutes, depending on the thickness of the filets. The top should develop a light char while the interior is just cooked through and tender.
- Glaze and serve: As soon as the salmon is out of the oven and still hot, brush a light layer of the reserved marinade over the top of each filet to add an extra burst of flavor. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired, then serve immediately.
Notes
- Using parchment paper on the baking sheet prevents the miso marinade from sticking and makes cleanup easier.
- Adjust the broiling time based on the salmon filets' thickness to avoid overcooking.
- For a deeper flavor, you can marinate the salmon up to 1 hour, but avoid much longer to prevent the fish from becoming too salty.
- Make sure to reserve some marinade before applying it to the salmon to use as a finishing glaze.
- If you don’t have tamari, you can substitute with gluten-free soy sauce, but tamari is preferred for a richer gluten-free option.
