Ingredients
Sauce Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- ⅓ cup low-sodium soy sauce or tamari
- 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon chili paste, such as Sambal Oelek
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 3 tablespoons honey
- 6 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tablespoon minced ginger (from a 1-inch piece)
Main Ingredients
- 2 pounds medium shrimp, deveined, tails removed
- 1 (13-ounce) bag chopped cabbage salad (dressing packet discarded)
- 1 to 2 heads butter lettuce, leaves separated (about 20 leaves)
Optional Garnishes
- Cilantro, chopped
- Sesame seeds
Instructions
- Prepare the sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon cold water to make a slurry. In a separate bowl, combine the soy sauce, toasted sesame oil, chili paste, brown sugar, honey, minced garlic, and minced ginger. Stir in the cornstarch slurry until fully incorporated.
- Cook the shrimp: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Pour the prepared sauce into the skillet and bring it to a simmer. Once simmering, add the shrimp and cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the shrimp become opaque and cooked through, about 5 to 8 minutes.
- Assemble the wraps: Place a spoonful of the chopped cabbage salad into each butter lettuce leaf. Top with several shrimp pieces and drizzle with any leftover sauce from the skillet. Garnish with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds if desired.
- Serve: Arrange the shrimp lettuce wraps on a platter and serve immediately while warm and fresh.
Notes
- Use low-sodium soy sauce or tamari to control the saltiness of the dish.
- The chili paste can be adjusted to your preferred spice level; reduce for milder flavor.
- For a gluten-free version, ensure the soy sauce or tamari used is gluten-free.
- Butter lettuce works best for wraps due to its soft, flexible leaves.
- This recipe can be doubled or halved depending on the number of servings needed.
