This Turkey Pepperoni Calzone recipe offers a delicious twist on traditional pizza by encasing turkey pepperoni, a blend of mozzarella, ricotta, and Parmesan cheeses in a flaky, golden crust. Baked to perfection and served with marinara sauce for dipping, it's a flavorful, satisfying meal perfect for pizza lovers looking for something different.

  • Total Time: 26 minutes
  • Yield: 5 servings

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 lb. Fresh Pizza Dough
  • 1/3 cup Pastry Flour (for dusting)

Filling

  • 4 oz. Turkey Pepperoni Slices, chopped
  • 8 oz. Fresh Moist Mozzarella, sliced thick
  • 1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1 cup Whole Milk Ricotta Cheese
  • 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 1 tsp. Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. Basil Flakes
  • 1/4 tsp. Black Pepper

Egg Wash

  • 1 Large Organic Egg
  • 3 tsp. Water
  • 1 tsp. Oregano

To Serve

  • 1 cup Marinara Sauce (for dipping)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: Spread pastry flour on your countertop to prevent sticking. Place the fresh pizza dough onto the floured surface and shape it into a circle with your hands. Use a rolling pin to flatten and even out the dough. Set aside.
  2. Make the Filling: Chop the turkey pepperoni into small pieces. In a mixing bowl, combine the parmesan cheese, ricotta cheese, chopped turkey pepperoni, shredded mozzarella, red pepper flakes, basil flakes, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly to blend the flavors.
  3. Assemble the Calzone: Spoon the prepared filling onto one half of the shaped dough circle. Layer thick slices of fresh mozzarella on top of the filling. Fold the other half of the dough over the filling, leaving about a one-inch margin at the bottom edge. Twist and pinch the edges to seal the calzone to prevent the filling from leaking out during baking.
  4. Prepare Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the organic egg, water, and oregano until well combined. Brush this egg mixture evenly over the top of the calzone, which will help it bake up golden and add flavor. Cut small slits in the top dough to allow steam to escape during baking.
  5. Bake the Calzone: Lightly spray a non-stick baking sheet with olive oil or non-stick cooking spray. Place the calzone on the prepared baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 425°F (218°C) for 16 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.
  6. Serve: Remove the calzone from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Serve warm with a side of marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

  • Using fresh pizza dough gives the calzone a light and fluffy texture, but store-bought dough can be used as a shortcut.
  • Adjust red pepper flakes to your preferred level of spice.
  • Ensure the calzone is sealed tightly to avoid any filling leakage during baking.
  • Allow the calzone to cool slightly before slicing to prevent the cheese from spilling out.
  • Serve with marinara sauce for a classic pizza-touch dipping experience.
