This comforting Yellow Dahl recipe features tender yellow split peas simmered in a fragrant blend of spices, coconut cream, and crushed tomatoes. It's a wholesome, flavorful dish perfect for a hearty meal, served traditionally with roti, yoghurt, mango chutney, and fresh coriander.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 35 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 Tbsp crushed ginger
  • 1 tsp crushed red chilli
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (400g)
  • 1 can coconut cream (400ml)
  • 3 cups water
  • 400g dried yellow split peas

To Serve

  • Roti
  • Natural yoghurt
  • Mango chutney
  • Coriander

Instructions

  1. Sauté Onions: Place a large frying pan or casserole dish over gentle heat. Add the olive oil and diced onion, then sauté gently for 5 minutes until the onions are soft and translucent.
  2. Add Aromatics: Stir in the crushed ginger and crushed red chilli, combining them thoroughly with the softened onions to build the base flavor.
  3. Cook Spices: Add the garam masala, garlic powder, turmeric, cinnamon, salt, and ground black pepper to the pan. Cook the spices for 1 minute, stirring constantly to release their aromas without burning.
  4. Add Liquids and Peas: Pour in the honey, crushed tomatoes, coconut cream, and water. Stir well, then add the dried yellow split peas, mixing them evenly into the liquid.
  5. Simmer Dahl: Cover the pan and simmer gently for 80 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent the dal from sticking or burning. Cook until the split peas are tender and the mixture thickens into a creamy consistency.
  6. Serve: Ladle the yellow dahl into bowls and serve hot accompanied by steamed rice or roti, natural yoghurt, mango chutney, and fresh coriander for garnish.

Notes

  • Stir the dahl occasionally during simmering to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
  • Adjust water quantity if needed during simmering to achieve desired consistency.
  • For extra heat, increase the amount of crushed red chilli or add fresh green chillies.
  • If using salted canned tomatoes, reduce the added salt accordingly.
  • This dish pairs wonderfully with basmati rice or warm flatbreads like roti or naan.
