This easy and creamy White Sauce Penne Pasta features a rich, cheesy white sauce made from butter, garlic, flour, milk, and chicken broth, tossed with perfectly cooked penne pasta. Ready in just 15 minutes, it's a comforting and satisfying main course perfect for quick weeknight dinners.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes
  • Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients

Pasta

  • 1 (16-ounce) package penne, about 4 cups

White Sauce

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Cheese and Seasoning

  • 1 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 2 teaspoons dried parsley
  • Garlic salt with parsley flakes, or salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese or additional Parmesan cheese, optional

Instructions

  1. Cook Pasta: Cook the penne pasta according to the package directions until al dente. Drain the pasta and set it aside to be added later to the sauce.
  2. Make Roux: In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter. Add the minced garlic and sauté, stirring constantly, for 1 minute to release its aroma.
  3. Add Flour: Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute more, stirring constantly to form a roux and eliminate the raw flour taste.
  4. Prepare White Sauce: Gradually add the milk and chicken broth while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Continue cooking and stirring until the sauce comes to a boil and thickens, about 5 minutes.
  5. Add Cheese and Seasonings: Stir in the grated Parmesan cheese, dried parsley, garlic salt or regular salt, and pepper. Keep stirring until the cheese melts completely and the sauce is smooth.
  6. Combine Pasta and Sauce: Add the drained penne pasta to the saucepan and stir well to evenly coat the pasta with the white sauce.
  7. Add Optional Cheese: Stir in the shredded mozzarella or additional Parmesan cheese until melted, creating a creamy, cheesy finish. Serve the pasta warm.

Notes

  • Cook the flour long enough to avoid a raw flour taste; refer to guides on how to make a proper roux for best results.
  • To prevent lumps, pour the milk slowly and whisk constantly while mixing.
  • For a heartier dish, add grilled chicken, chicken sausage, diced ham, or shrimp.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Reheat leftovers in the microwave or on the stove, adding a splash of milk if needed to loosen the sauce.
